The Egan Cup

The Egan Cup was created to honour Mae Egan of Dublin, Ireland.
The Egan name is one of the most important names in Irish history. Egan is the anglicised form of the Irish name Mac Aodhagain, meaning son of Aodh (fire). The sept originated in Ui Maine, but later settled chiefly in Ur Mhumhan (Ormond) an area in Tipperary, Offaly and Kilkenny. They were traditionally a brehon (judicial) family who acted as advisors /lawyers for the chiefs.
Mae Egan was born in Dublin, Ireland on December 22, 1905 to Patrick Egan and Ann Maher. Patrick was recruited to work as a master blacksmith in McAdam, New Brunswick for the Canadian Pacific Railway and moved there in 1911. Mae grew up in McAdam and married Mickey McGuire on September 21, 1929 and had 11 wonderful children. These children, grandchildren , great-grandchildren and all heirs will honour her memory by the playing of the Egan Cup.
The Egan Cup was minted on July 26, 2007 by Mae Egan’s 8th child - Leo McGuire - for the first playing on July 27, 2007 at Ballantrae Golf Club, 1 The Master’s South, Ballantrae, Ontario. The annual playing of the Egan Cup will move around the world to be played wherever there are Egans or relatives of Mae Egan.
Participants of the Egan Cup will be limited, of course, to descendants of Mae Egan and Mickey McGuire or people lucky enough to join the blood line or marry into the Clan.
Rules of the playing of the annual Egan Cup may change from time to time to suit the circumstances of the day. The Rules President (as in his other life) is Leo McGuire and he will have full control over the changing of the Egan Rules.
