If you can't beat 'em, then join 'em....

With the last two Egan Cups being won by the Scots, Leo has determined that the luck is clearly not with the Irish. He's ready to trade in his lucky clover for a tartan and bagpipes. In preparation for the Egan Cup, Leo, Jeanette, Annette and Doug got in a practice round at the Royal Ashburn course north of Toronto this past Sunday. The whole gang is seen in the photo with the starter who was nattily attired in his kilt. After the round, we settled in for lunch where Leo (in his best Scottish brogue) ordered a double helping of Scottish Pie! (see picture above)

Just goes to show....if you can't beat 'em then join 'em!

The 2009 Egan Cup!

Hi Golfers,

The third year of the Egan Cup was another disaster. Just look at the photo of this year's champ and last year's champ. There is not a drop of Egan blood in either of them. They were both married into the clan after much begging. The only real Champion is the 2007 Champ who had a real score.

You have all heard that London Tim is the Champ this year and now I am here to tell you the real story as my much older brother Pat and I played with both London Tim and that unknown Scottish lad.

It started on the first tee when I was the only one who drove it straight down the fairway. It was a long par 5 and I made an easy birdie. Where was London Tim? Way in the woods and it took us hours to find his ball before he took a double. It went on for 9 holes like that and he was 10 over par on the front nine. We knew standing on the 10th tee that he was not going to be any competition this year.

Then something strange happened. As London Tim and that Scottish fellow were in the same cart I saw them on their cell phone. Then all of a sudden a girl showed up in a cart and something changed hands. My drive was way down the fairway and I didn't notice what had occurred. Then this same girl kept coming back again, and again and again. I also noticed London Tim and that Scottish fellow parring hole after hole.

When the 18 holes were over London Tim had parred the back nine with one bogey and one birdie. Amazing or suspicious. Was this the same golfer who was 10 over par on the front 9 and even par on the back? I was sure that the official scorer would pick this up and no way London Tim would win the Egan Cup for 2009. The Scottish fellow was playing tricks on his own. He was parring every hole, had the long drive and then on the 17th took a 12 or something to get his score ready for another win this year.

Then at the banquet it was announced that London Tim was the new Egan Cup Champ for 2009. I couldn't believe it. Look at the smile on his face. Has anyone seen him smile like this before. What I suspected must be true. The girl in the cart was his dealer. I left the banquet, called the RCMP in Fredericton to get the CSI team out immediately.

Then everyone saw London Tim loading the car with his luggage, lovely wife and two kids to head back to London. He was going to drive all night to get away from being tested. I tried to get the Egan Cup from Liam in Mae McGuire's luggage. He wouldn't let it out of his site and jumped in the car and took off up the Trans Canada to safety in Ontario. The RCMP couldn't catch him as in 3 trips in NB this summer I never did see one on the TCH.

Now look at the photo again. London Tim is touching the Egan Cup without white gloves. Not only that but rumour has it that he has been in every pub in London drinking beer out of the infamous Egan Cup. Shame! Shame!

Now the truth is known and London Tim is not a true champion. Things will be different in Ottawa next year when I have control of the rules and will take home the Cup. Let me know if anyone has a preferred date in 2010.

Great job Doug and Annette for all the laughs and the great presentation at the banquet.

We all know it is not the golf that makes the Egan Cup. It is family. Especially the ones below who we miss dearly.

2009 Egan Cup

Retief Goosen may have taken home over a million dollars on March 22, 2009 but the real golf was played on Thursday after the Transitions Championship. That is when the 2007 Egan Cup Champion tamed the famous Cooperhead Course at the Innisbrook Country Club. The pros call this the toughest course they play on tour but it was no match for the Egan Cup Champ.
He had a rough start with a double, triple and another double but then birdie the par 3 and he was on his way to an 89 score that was outstanding.
No wonder Soo Steve and London Tim have withdrawn from the 2009 Egan Cup. They know they can't beat him. I also suspect there will be a no show from Islander Sterling for the same reason. Wounded Knee George will be no competition, but then he never was.
Where is The Scot? Haven't heard from him in months. Will he defend his title? I doubt it.

YOUTH RULES THE DAY AT THE 2008 EGAN CUP, SCOTLAND CELEBRATES

YOUTH RULES THE DAY AT THE 2008 EGAN CUP, SCOTLAND CELEBRATES

Associated Press, NOTTAWASAGA, Ontario – Irish eyes were not smiling as youth ruled the day at the Egan Cup Championship held recently at the Nottawasaga Inn north of Toronto.

Doug Robertson fired a sizzling 3 under par 70 (adjusted), on way to his first Egan Cup Championship. After a dominant performance on the opening hole, the McGuires in the foursome (Gerry, Pat, Steve) could sense that the die was cast. There would be no repeat for Gerry McGuire, as the 2007 Cup Champ was left to pick up the pieces and regroup for the 2009 campaign.

At the post-game press conference, when the foursome reconvened, a clearly discombobulated Gerry McGuire was heard to say “My confidence is at rather a low ebb at the moment. My golf has gotten so bad, I've had to have my ball retriever re-gripped.” Steve McGuire remarked “I spend so much time in the woods these days, I can tell you which plants are edible.” Pat McGuire added “This season, the only time I hit a couple of balls cleanly was outside the clubhouse - when I accidentally stepped on a rake.”

For his part, Robertson was elated with the victory. “The competition was stiff and the conditions were harsh....but I’m obviously pleased with the result. “ Robertson acknowledged taking strength of purpose from a very special woman, the Cup’s namesake, May McGuire ne: Egan. He recognizes the unique responsibilities of being the Cup holder noting, “If you are given a chance to be a role model, I think you should always take it because you can influence a person's life in a positive light, and that's what I want to do. That's what it's all about.” Later, during the press conference when Robertson assumed the microphone was off, he was heard to say “....it was like taking candy from a baby....”

The Cup returned to Scotland this past week and the streets of Edinburgh were closed to accommodate the parade. Pandemonium was the name of the day as a near riot ensued (see attached). A motion is before the Scottish Parliament to declare a national holiday in honour of Robertson’s considerable achievement. The motion is expected to receive all party endorsement.

The Egan Cup resumes in next August at a location to be announced in the near future.

The Real Golfers of The Egan Cup!

Here are the real heros of the Egan Cup. A wet looking bunch.

But the smartest was Sheila as when this photo was taken Sheila was watching a violent movie with Ty and Brayden and eating popcorn in her hotel room.
