Egan Cup Moves to Ontario!

Hi Gang,

The 2012 Egan Cup is now history.  After being in New Brunswick, and around the globe, for the last two years it is back in Ontario where it belongs.  And the Winner is:

The proud winner of the Egan Cup is Shawn McGuire with daughter Megan cheering him on.  He was so happy to be the 6th Champion he was speechless.  More about this later.

What a weekend we had weather wise.  The weather was so hot and sunny that it was too hot to drink beer on the deck until the sun went down.  The outdoor pool was the hit for the weekend.  And yes, it was accident free as no one let Judy drive a cart and Sybil came home without scars.  Gaye was guarded 24/7 so that she wouldn't fall this weekend and she made it back to London without visiting any hospitals.

Betty and Pat had been in Toronto for this hot weather for a week and when everyone met Betty she kept telling everyone she couldn't live here because of the heat.  Of course you have to put this into perspective after living years in the Bay of Fundy Fog.

Most of us arrived on Friday night and the happy hour started really early.  The rest of the gang arrived on Saturday in time for the Junior Golf tournament.  Tim and Liam played with Sean and Ty for the first foursome.  Brad and Shamus teamed up with Leo and Brayden for the second foursome.  It was a hot one but the kids all enjoyed there 9 holes of golf.  There was no one winner as they were all winners.

Saturday night saw the gang going to Alliston for supper where Doug's porsche was a hit with the kids. Check it out in the parking lot with Liam driving and Ty holding on.

And there is even room for two sets of golf clubs.  Doug was just back from fighting crime in China, but we won't go there with that story.

Sunday was the big day with the Egan Cup on the line.  We had 24 golfers playing for the top prize and everyone wanted to take it home and show their friends and neighbours.  The four brothers lead off the golf and played together for the first time.  It was a historical moment.  Here are the photos of the 24 golfers in the 2012 Egan Cup.  You can double click on the photos to get a closer view.

Notice the first photo where Tim stuck it to the par 3 18th and won the closest to the pin.  He also won the long drive of the day but his 81 couldn't beat Pat with a 76 or me with a 79.  He cried in his beer the rest of the day.  Pat and I were riding in the same cart and at times I had his shaking in his golf shoes as he thought I was going to beat him.

As you can see the weather was great, the best we have had for golf at Nottawasaga Resort.  It was then time for the putting contest and just like last year Dave, Juilet and Ainsley showed up to party with the gang. Great that you could make it again this year and to see Ainsley playing with her cousins was special.

The putting contest ended with a tie and Liam and Shamus had to putt off.  Shamus was great but he has only been playing golf for a year or so and was no match for Liam the Pro who won the playoff.  He received the new Putting Trophy that he keeps for a year and travels all over the world with it and brings it back for the competition next year. Liam was given the new putting champ trophy and I heard after that Alx wants to put a plaque on it stating 'The Egan Putt'.  Great idea.

The meal was at 6 PM so it was a rush to get to the meal on time.  He was a great meal and then everyone retired to the booked room in the basement for the presentations.  Everyone wanted to win the Egan Cup but we all know their is only one winner and many would go home disappointed.

I wish I had the words to express what a great job Steve and Anne Marie did for the Egan Cup this year. Their presentation was out of this world.  They had a slid show of all the old photos and some I had never seen before.  They even travelled to McAdam and interviewed the Mayor - Frank Carroll.  Frank was interviewed by Steve about the McGuire Gang.  The best part was when he said that Gaye was his favourite teacher and it was because of him that he went into teaching for the next 40 years.  Steve with your shots at George you are now a true member of the McGuire Gang.

Now for a little sidebar.  Cooper was sitting by me when he saw the photo of  Mom and her photo on the screen.  He asked me who she was and the 3 year old also wanted to know if she died.  Then a few seconds later he said:  "Papa, when I get home I am going to draw you a picture of your Mom so you won't forget her."  Amazing.

Then after the many prizes given out by Steve and Anne Marie for the kids and the long and shot drives it was time to find out who was the winner for 2012.  Pat had the computer set up and all the kids were around to push the button to find out who won.  It came out as a tie.  Doug and Shawn were tied after Doug shot 81 and Shawn 105 but the Callaway Scoring Systems had them equal at 70.

Everyone was watching Doug and Shawn for the final push of the button to see who won.  You could tell they were both nervous and wanted the fame.  When Shawn was declared the winner he was speechless. After hearing the roars of the crowd he slowly made his way and accepted the Egan Cup.  I suspect that he will have it when he runs the Boston Marathon next year.

It was now time for the Entertainment portion of the evening.  Cooper led off this portion with a joke as it was time for him to go to bed.  He stood on a chair and all his cousins gathered around him.  Then in a clear voice he said:  "Do you know why the M and M went to school?"  All his cousins said NO and then he said:  "Because he wanted to be a Smartie."  The place went up and Cooper loved it.  In fact I think he thought every kid at the hotel was his cousin as he said hello to every kid he saw.

Then Alex played the piano and did an amazing job.  Not to be out done, Ty showed his talent on the keyboard for all to hear.  Morgan and Baily also played a tune and took bows for their performance.  Little Joey was not there this year but it is hoped he can make it next year.  Then Deb and Dave pulled out the guitars for the final sing song.  Great job everyone.

Then things got a bit foggy as we had our own booze in the room.  Someone else will have to take over now.

The Cup Belongs in Ottawa!

Hi Gang,

Yes, the Ottawa Senators have made the playoffs and they are hoping to bring the Stanley Cup to Ottawa.  I am not talking about the Stanley Cup but the more famous Egan Cup and it belongs in Ottawa.

After Sybil was run over by Judy last Egan Cup she has used up all my health benefits in massages, physiotherapist services, chiropractor services and even a podiatrist because Judy ran over her foot.  She is now completely healed and will bring the Egan Cup back to Ottawa, where it belongs.  She went out last month and purchased a huge Nancy Lopez driver to make sure it happens.  After all as she said:  "If Steve can win the Egan Cup then anyone can."

Now the dates and place is set.

Friday, August 3 to Monday August 6th.

Sunday is the golf day for the Egan cup.

Same place as last year - Nottawasaga Inn Convention Center and Golf Resort, 6015 Highway 89, Alliston, Ontario Canada L9R 1A4 (705) 435-5501 1-800-669-5501 www.NottawasagaResort.com  Our reservation number is #492485.  You can start booking after April 15th and will also be in Leo's name and Egan Cup.

Rooms are $128 (plus 13%) a night and golf is $62 (plus 13%) and that includes the cart.  The banquet meal is $29.95 (18% tip plus another 13%).  After dinner we will have the room downstairs where we can bring our own booze at a cost of $75 for the room that includes the ice and glasses plus $5 per person.

Hope everyone can make it.

The Egan Cup Has Been Everywhere!

Hi Gang,

Belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to one and all, especially other Cup winners. I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful holiday season with lots of good cheer..

What can I say but what a crazy year it’s been. Strange and remarkable things have been happening the world over. The Arab Spring, the debt crises in Europe, Pat putting two balls in the drink at the first hole at St Andrew’s without a club following the balls and I had the honour of winning the Egan Cup. For people who know me winning a golf tournament was the equivalent of the first man on the moon. Man I love the Callaway Scoring System.

The Cup is resting at home in NB, as it should be, with a view from Anne Marie’s front window looking out over where the St John and Kennebecasis Rivers meet. It has been well traveled and many admiring eyes have paid proper compliments to it. No touching the cup of course without the proper hand wear.

It was a fantastic time and a great experience getting to meet everyone this past summer.  I love the atmosphere and the interaction amongst the different age groups. Seeing the younger children and the smiles on their faces I know this will be an event they talk about and look forward to year after year. With people so busy these days it’s why everyone makes it an important date on their calendars.  This is a testament to how well everyone was raised and most of all the importance of family. It must have been your Mother Mae and that fine McAdam water.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone, defending my title and getting to meet George and Gaye. Once the family elder statesmen get together and decide where and when we can all start planning once again for the Egan Cup.

Take care everyone and be safe.

PS Judy and Sheila, I know who the Oland killer is.

Egan Cup Stays Down East!

Hi Gang,

The 5th Annual Egan Cup Champion is Steve. Steve Who? One person was heard to say "I didn't know Soo Steve was here playing." More on who Steve is later.

The Egan Cup didn't start very well when it was learned that Gaye fell and broke her hip just after checking in. The bad news was felt by everyone and we just couldn't believe it. George was parking the car after checking in and came back to find Gaye in a wheel chair. She then went by ambulance to Alliston hospital where they confirmed that her hip was fractured. They arranged for her to be taken to Stratford, close to London, for her operation on Sunday. She is now recovering in rehab and it is hoped she will be transferred to London this week. Swift recovery Gaye.

Saturday saw the first every Egan Cup Junior tournament and here is the field:

Scott planned it but couldn't be there as he was with Gaye but there was a huge crowd that showed up at 9 AM to see them tee up and play 9 holes in a golf cart. The game ended with a tie but everyone agreed it was going to be part of the Egan Cup from now on. My prediction will be that in 10 years Cooper will be beating them all.

In the afternoon Leo arranged a putting contest for everyone. There was an A and B section with Pat winning the A and Liam winning the B section. Then Liam demanded a playoff with the A & B Champions. It was a close playoff with Pat winning by one stroke. Then Pat was heard to say; "I love beating those young snots." So now Liam and all the kids learned a new word.

The weather was amazing all day and for supper we gathered on the deck. Leo, Judy & Doreen went and got a bunch of food and put in my room as we had adjourning rooms with Cooper. As the sun was setting Debbie brought out her 12 string guitar and we had a great sing along until well after midnight. Alli took the guitar for a John Prine song and did a great job for not playing the guitar for years.

I was up early with Cooper on the deck the next morning and you could hear the thunder in the distance. We all thought it was going to be a repeat of the second Egan Cup when it rained all day. Our tee offs were at 10 AM and by 9:30 AM the rain was coming down hard. I had to get my rain gear on while standing under a tree. When I drove away from the car my clubs fell on the ground as I forget to strap them on. More mud and wet clubs.

The pro shop let us start a half hour late as they said the storm was passing through and it did and we had great weather but really hot and muggy the rest of the day.

Sybil had her new Egan Cup outfit on and driving the golf cart with Judy as passenger when she put her clubs on the back while it was raining. Only Karen was there to see what happened next and she took out her IPhone and recorded Sybil's clubs falling off the cart as she didn't strap them down. She stopped the cart, walked back and picked them out of the mud and was carrying them to the cart when the disaster happened. Judy moved over to the drivers side, put the cart into reverse and backed over Sybil. She fell back on the pavement in a mud puddle and couldn't get up as her foot was stuck under the cart. Karen was still filming. Karen claims that she shut it off then but I don't think she could resist it. She did take swift action and told Judy not to back up any farther. They got the cart into forward gear and finally Sybil got up from the mud. Her Egan Cup outfit ruined. The blood from her arm was all over her shorts. But being a real golfer she cleaned herself up and was at the first tee to lead the girls in the longest drive of the day.

The day went smoothly on the course after that and we had a great day. We sat around the bar outside in the hot weather as everyone finished, Pat put the scores into the computer and the kids played on the putting green. It was great to have Ron and Arlene there for the Egan Cup all the way from Tower Hill. Randy, Rachel and Megan showed up for breakfast in the morning on their way up north. David, Juilet and Ainsley arrived during the play and it was great to see them make a short visit before heading south to Florida where it was cooler. Cooper and Ainsley stole the show on the putting green. Gerard, Marcia, Logan & Mackenzie showed up for the dinner and presentation. It was great to see them and talk to Logan and Mackenzie about their ball careers.

Then it was on to dinner at 6 PM and the presentation of the famous Egan Cup in a downstairs room. Pat did a great job as MC and he gave out all the prizes but the main prize was mine winning the closest to the pin on number 9. Allison and Alex gave a great tribute to their grandmother Gaye and wished her well in her recovery.

Now I have to talk about the Egan Cup. I was tricked by singing too much the night before and was not on my game. Pat had a 77 and Tim and I were next at 90 with Doug a distant 92. We didn't give Pat any competition this year but wait until next year.

The drum roll was when Pat had Baily and Morgan bring in the Egan Cup holding it with white gloves to the cheering crowd. Then the computer was ready. Liam, Adam and Ty were ready to push the button and announce the winner. They all hollered out the name of the Egan Cup - STEVE. The place went up. I looked around at Steve and he was the most surprised of them all. Who is this guy? Well he is Steve Martin, Anne Marie's boyfriend from Saint John. The Egan Cup was kept in the Saint John family and went back down East.

Steve, his face as red as his shirt gave a great acceptance speech and said he would honour and cherish the Egan Cup until next time. Then it was learned that he is from Cape Breton. How could that happened? How could we let a Caper into the inter sanctum. I went to work on the Cup right away and installed a sensor to alert the RCMP if the Cup crosses into Nova Scotia during the next year. If it does the RCMP will swoop down and seize the Cup and bring it to Ottawa, where it belongs.

Pat and Sybil won the longest drive contest. Annette and I won the closest to the hole. Pat won the best score and bought himself a new Ping hat. Then Pat pulled a good one on me. Remember last year when I gave him a beautiful framed photo of me winning the Original Egan Cup. He asked me to come up and he gave me his Member Tag from his golf course. He had me read the back for everyone to know that his name is engraved as the 2010 Senior Champion. He had to beat 55 to 65 year old snots to win. I then walked back to my table and threw the tag away onto the Junior golf table. The place went up.

It was a fun night and Debbie brought out the guitar and Sybil went to babysit Cooper so Dave could come out of retirement and sing some great songs to the delight of the audience. Before the singing started we were all talking and didn't realize what was happening in the back of the room. Liam, Adam and Ty had taken off a white table cloth and Little Joey made an appearance at this years Egan Cup. They did a great job and Ty said it was going to be better next year.

Then Judy took the floor and presented me with a birthday present. Why now, my birthday was not until September 14th. Because it was a special birthday. The baby will turn 65. We were then all depressed. The gift was a beautiful painting of Dingle, Ireland by a Sister from Ireland that reminded us of our trip to Ireland with Judy and Alan. Thanks family it matches Sybil's colours in our family room, whatever that means.

Cooper had a great time being next door to Papa in the hotel. He loved playing with Allison and Alex and when Tara asked him what was his favourite part of the Egan Cup was he said: "Playing with the gouls (girls)."

Hope I didn't miss anything but you must be tired of readying by now. You can click on the photos to see them better.

Original Egan Cup Champ Adds To His Trophy Case.

Hi Egan Cup Fans,

It is only a month away for the 2011 Egan Cup Classic. The Original Egan Cup Champ has been warming up for the big date as you can see from this photo from winning the Lexus Golf Tour this month.

As you can see from the world golf top it was a world class tournament. It was a 4 ball scramble and we finished with a 61. Notice the Lexus shirt that went to the Winners. That was not all. We get free beer and all the smoke meat sandwiches we can eat each time we go to the restaurant. If I melted down the gold in the trophy it would be worth thousands.

So, I am ready. Are you other so called golfers ready for the 2011 Egan Cup?
